MLM Lists – How to and Not to Build Them

Having an effective lead list is the key to your success in network marketing. Leads are the lifeblood of this industry.

In the near past, the method to begin your lead list was to get your “List of 100.” This was the list your sponsor told you to build from those you know, friends, family co-workers, basically anyone with a pulse who might actually know who you are. This was called your “warm list.” Probably, the only reason it was called this was the fact that if they had a pulse, they must be warm.

The percentage of these people who actually are looking for a network marketing opportunity is less than 1%. On top of this, you run the risk of alienating those close to you.

What to do then?

Before the internet, you could advertise in newspapers, magazines and other places, hoping someone would call and want to get involved. This was expensive and very risky at best. Once someone had actually gone through the publication that you paid big money to be in, they tossed it out.

Another method was to hang around malls, coffee shops and bingo parlours meeting everyone you could, getting their phone number and calling them later to invite them to an “opportunity meeting.” This method gets you about the same success rate as the friends and family list, none.

How then to create a good MLM lead list?

The internet is the perfect media to get you started.

First, you will need a way to capture and contact the leads you generate. There are software programs you can get for your website, but they can be pricey. By far the best ones to use are online. Two of the more popular sites are Aweber and Get Response.

Once you have your auto responder, you will need a lead capture page. This is the page where those who will eventually become your MLM lead list will land to hear about what you are offering. This can be a blog or a page offering a free service or newsletter. The newsletter approach helps you build your list on the auto responder. Make sure this page is catchy, gives your reader reason to want to come back and builds trust with you.

So, how do you get people to your lead capture page? There are many methods out there.

If you have a good budget, you can try pay per click advertising. Essentially, you pay sites like Google and Yahoo to send traffic to your lead capture page. Many people are achieving great success using this method.

Another method is to make use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Linked In to name a few. Expand your list on these sites, build trust with those you connect with and invite them to your site.

A third way is to engage in article marketing. Write articles targeting certain keywords and submit to article publishing sites like EzineArticles. These sites will allow you to link back to your site, sending you traffic and ranking you higher in the search engines.

There are many people online who will try and sell you information on how to build your MLM lead list. Though this information is mostly good, one can usually find a lot of what they sell you in various free articles posted on the web or from the many free webinars given but those who are extremely effective at building huge MLM lead lists.
